FOOD FREEDOM

Understanding Freedom Beyond Choices

What if freedom meant much more than just being able to choose where to live or where to travel? What if, instead, it meant waking up each day with a new found energy to embrace all that life has to offer? In our journey through life, it’s essential to understand how the food we consume plays an indispensable role in how we feel mentally and physically. Imagine choosing what to eat not out of neglect for your health, but from a deep understanding of what your body really needs. This kind of freedom is what I explore in my work, especially during Juneteenth.

Juneteenth: Reflecting on Freedom and Nourishment

Juneteenth is a potent reminder of freedom that was fought for and earned, but it also highlights the ongoing necessity of building lives, families, and communities. Food has always been a significant part of that narrative. The ability to grow, prepare, and share meals ties deeply into independence and self-determination. It represents memory, love, culture, and the traditions passed down through generations. Therefore, when discussing food in the context of Juneteenth, I encourage conversations that delve deeper than just what tastes good.

Exploring Our Meals for Better Health

It’s vital to ask ourselves poignant questions:

  • What is this food truly doing for us?

  • What ingredients originate from the ground, and how can these meals contribute not just to our pleasure, but also to our health and the well-being of our loved ones?

  • The goal here isn't to criticize traditional dishes but to take a closer look at the ingredients we consume.

Many of us are already enjoying foods that come from the earth without even realizing it. For instance, grits come from ground corn, while snacks like popcorn are also derived from the same source. Additionally, a classic sandwich may feature fresh toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and peppers. We should not overlook the potential of seasoned grits adorned with herbs such as parsley and chives. Barbecue dishes often include flavorful ingredients like garlic and spices, wrapped together with a fresh slaw made from purple cabbage and carrots.

This awareness is the essence of what I call ‘FAVES’—short for fruits and veggies every spread. This simple idea encourages us to include fresh produce and other wholesome ingredients throughout our meals daily. You don’t need to overhaul your entire plate overnight; starting small is perfectly okay.

For example, take a moment to notice one ingredient you can focus on, and gradually add more as you feel inspired. The shift from merely enjoying our cultural dishes to understanding how food connects with our health narratives can spark a new kind of appreciation.

Throughout my journey as a cultural educator and storyteller, I’ve witnessed the powerful impact of understanding food and culture. Combining my experiences in both the arts and healthcare, I have seen how food education can empower people to take charge of their wellbeing. Healing isn't just about medicine—it's about knowledge. This Juneteenth, let's cherish not just the freedom to choose, but the wisdom to choose wisely through our foods.
